Arlington ISD Sets Guinness World Record for Biggest Mum to Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer
For seven years, the Arlington ISD Special Education Department has created large Homecoming mums as an annual event. This year the team decided to raise awareness for breast cancer by creating a pink and white mum that is about 22 feet long.
During the summertime, over a dozen staff members created the mum with over 450 yards of ribbon, about 50 hours of work, and some recycled material.
“We just wanted to give some hope and raise awareness while having fun, too”— Sherry Hall, Arlington ISD special education instructional specialist.
During the month of October, Arlington residents can view the mum at the Downtown Arlington Public Library.
The department has been working for over two years to get their mum plan approved by the Guinness World Records since the process was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff from the University of Arlington’s architecture department helped to measure and send in the measurements to the Guinness World Records.
